Pitstops by ng Homes and School of Hard KnocksPublished:
Pitstops is a large-scale partnership project between ng homes (North Glasgow Housing Association) and School of Hard Knocks (social inclusion charity). The project combines ng homes’ focus on regeneration and vision of making north Glasgow a great place to live, learn, work and invest in, with School of Hard Knocks’ well-established delivery methodology of using contact sport to engage with unemployed and disengaged members of the community.
The project will deliver eight-week personal development courses for unemployed adults who feel they face barriers to gaining and sustaining employment. The course combines physical fitness and rugby training with individualised personal development and employability support. The project aims to support participants to take steps towards becoming more ready for the world of work, or other positive destinations including college, voluntary work or healthy living. This is done through course learning, peer and staff support, and signposting to ‘pitstops’ (services that can support participants with their underlying needs and barriers).
The forthcoming Pitstops course is targeted at unemployed adult males over 18 years of age, and is based around contact rugby.
Participants will take part in rugby and fitness training as well as indoor learning and development sessions, based around employability and personal development. The education delivery partner, Glasgow Kelvin College, will deliver the SQA Employability Award, Community Achievement Award, and a number of optional additional qualifications including First Aid, and REHIS Health and Safety. Participants will also receive personal support and ‘pitstop’ support to address their personal needs and barriers to employment.
The next Pitstops course starts in September 2016, and runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for eight weeks.
