Further Education Colleges

College is for anyone who feels ready to do more formal learning and a course that leads to qualifications and certificates.

College would be suitable for someone who has enjoyed community learning and wants to do more or if you enjoyed learning in the past and feel quite confident in your skills. Attendance is usually part or full time.

If you learn up to 16 hours a week this should not affect your benefits. However, if you want to learn full time this will affect your benefits, so it is best to get advice from the college or Job Centre Plus before applying for a full time college course.

Types of things you can learn about at College:

Higher Education - University

University is suitable for anyone who has already got qualifications and would like to take their study further and for those who have completed an access course.

This type of learning is different and does require a lot of self study and research. Courses are delivered in lectures and tutorials, with notes available online. There are wide variety of courses available and many universities in the major cities in Scotland. You can find out what courses they offer by searching online or phoning a university and asking for a list of courses - sometimes called a prospectus.

In Scotland you will not be asked to pay tuition fees for your course but may have to pay for books, travel and other expenses. It is best to check with the university you are applying to or The Student Awards Agency for advice.

The Scottish Wider Access Programme works in partnership with the Colleges and Universities of Scotland to provide a route into Higher Education for adults with few or no qualifications or qualifications which are out of date.
