This is an example of Best Practice carried out by a health board, which was discussed at a workshop event. |
Main Learning Point |
By including service users in the development of the toolkit, we made it fit the purpose of those using it. |
What we did |
Firstly, we carried out Needs Assessment Research, and from this we developed an action plan. This research took the form of several staff focus groups and client focus groups. Homes were also asked to fill out questionnaires on what they would like to be included in the toolkit, and what format it should take. Scottish Government Policy was consulted. Once the research was completed, we drew up a finalized project, and submitted bids to Community Food and Health Scotland. Cooking groups were set up, monitored and evaluated, which fed into the toolkit. The toolkit was launched, which staff and clients were invited to attend, which recognised the contribution and achievement of all. The toolkit has become part of the new Health and Homelessness Action Plan. |
What was good about the activity? |
Because service users were consulted, the toolkit was fit for purpose, and easy to use for those who it was aimed at. Visual aids were very useful. |
What were the challenges? |
It was a lengthy process, particularly the Needs Assessment Research over several groups. |
What could have been improved? |
Those who have visual impairments/colour blindness could have been better catered for, perhaps by producing an audio format. |
Resources to consider. |
Time to carry out needs assessment. Staff time and expertise in research and funding areas in particular. Cost of producing and distributing a high quality product. |
